A workload identifies a set of components that deliver business value. The workload is usually the level of detail that business and technology leaders communicate about. Examples of workloads include marketing websites, ecommerce websites, the backend for a mobile app, and analytic platforms. Workloads vary in their level of architectural complexity. They can be simple, such as a static website, or complex, such as microservices architectures with multiple data stores and many components.

Workloads

Based on the best practices selected, the Well Architected Tool identifies areas of high and medium risk as measured against each applied lens. The improvement plan shows the recommended improvement items identified in the workload.

The Serverless Application Lens focuses on designing, deploying, and architecting your serverless application workloads in the AWS Cloud. This lens covers scenarios such as RESTful microservices, mobile app backends, stream processing, and web applications. Using this lens helps you apply best practices when building serverless application workloads on AWS.

Architectural and operational choices that AWS has found might result in significant negative impact to a business. These HRIs might affect organizational operations, assets, and individuals.

The AWS Well-Architected Tool lets you review your workloads against current AWS best practices and obtain advice on how to architect your workloads for the cloud. The AWS Well-Architected Tool delivers a list of issues found in your workloads and step-by-step guidance to make improvements. You can also view the issues found across the portfolio of workloads. We recommend performing a workload review at major milestones in your development cycle.

The Well-Architected Tool Dashboard is available from the left navigation and gives you access to your workloads and their associated milestones.

Workload Shares in AWS Well-Architected Tool offers you a simple way to share workloads with other AWS accounts. This feature enables shared visibility into High Risk Issues (HRIs) identified in workloads and streamlines collaboration with other workload reviewers, such as a Cloud Center of Excellence Lead, a member of your AWS account team, or an AWS Well-Architected Partner Program member.

Workload shares

A workload invitation is a request to share a workload owned by another AWS account. A workload can be shared with all users in an AWS account, individual IAM users, or both. If you accept the workload invitation, the workload is added to your Workloads and Dashboard pages. If you reject the invitation, it's removed from the list.

Workload invitations

Lenses provide a way for customers to consistently measure their architectures against best practices and identify areas for improvement. The AWS Well-Architected Framework Lens is automatically applied when a workload is defined. A workload can have one or more lenses applied. Each lens has its own set of questions, best practices, notes, and improvement plan.

The Workload reviews section displays information for each workload. You can filter the list based on risk.

Workload reviews

Profiles allow customers to tailor their Well-Architected reviews based on their business goals. This feature creates a mechanism for continuous improvement by encouraging customers to review their workloads with certain goals in mind first, and then complete the remaining Well-Architected review questions. Once the profile is applied to a workload, customers are then presented with a set of prioritized Well-Architected questions that are aligned to their desired outcomes.

Profiles

Review Templates allow customers to eliminate duplication and foster consistency across your workloads. Customers can effortlessly craft review templates to answer questions, update notes, and even incorporate Custom Lenses across your workloads. The review templates provide workload owners with a pre-populated baseline to kick-start their reviews and empower teams to concentrate on the pivotal aspects of their workloads, ensure uniformity in reviews, and eradicate redundancy for commonly asked questions.

Custom lenses allow customers to create their own pillars, questions, best practices, helpful resources, and improvement plans. They also can specify rules to determine which options, when not followed, result in high or medium risk issues being flagged. Customers then provide their own guidance for resolving the risk.

Consolidated Report enables customers to see an overview of risks across all their workloads, helping them more easily identify risk trends. This macro-level view helps executive stakeholders understand where common issues lie, and prioritize team resources to drive widespread improvement.
